Difference between MS and ERW pipes

Both mild steel (MS) and electric resistance welded (ERW) pipes are commonly used steel pipes. However, their manufacturing processes and characteristics differ greatly, making them suitable for diverse applications. Here, we share some of the key distinctions between MS and ERW pipes.

 

 

1. Manufacturing Process:


-> MS pipes:

 

  • Seamless MS pipes: These are manufactured using a hot rolling process. Steel billets are heated to a high temperature, making them more malleable. They are then extruded through a die to form a pipe without any welds. This process results in seamless pipes.
  • Welded MS pipes: Mild steel pipes can also be produced by welding, similar to ERW pipes, but using mild steel material.


 -> ERW pipes:

 

ERW pipes are formed from steel coils that are continuously rolled and shaped into a cylindrical form. The edges are then brought together and fused using an electric current. The current creates a high-temperature weld along the seam. This process allows for continuous production and makes ERW pipes a more cost-effective option.

 

 

2. Material Properties:

 

-> MS pipes:

 

MS pipes are known for their impressive ductility and malleability, making them easier to bend and manipulate. They offer good strength and are suitable for applications where pressure is not a major concern. Seamless MS pipes can be more expensive due to the complexity of their manufacturing process.

 

-> ERW pipes:

 

The welding process used in ERW pipes can affect their material properties. The heat from welding creates a slight metallurgical difference in the weld zone compared to the base metal. However, modern ERW pipes are manufactured with high-quality control to minimise these variations. ERW pipes generally offer good strength and are suitable for a more diverse range of pressure applications compared to MS pipes.

 

 

3.Choosing the Right Pipe:

 

-> Application:

 

One must consider the purpose of the pipe. If easy bending is important for the application, MS pipes, particularly the seamless variety, are generally more preferable. However, for pressure applications, ERW pipes offer better strength.

 

-> Pressure rating:

 

Determining the pressure requirements of the project is vital. Seamless MS pipes are generally limited to low-pressure applications, while ERW pipes can handle moderate to high pressures depending on their wall thickness.
